David Behrens - Arapaho Moon
24.5 x 19 Limited Edition Print Native American people have always identified with the ways of the wolf. Whether it was the Pawnee, who used “wolf signals” in communicating with each other, or the Blackfoot, who described harmonious life as “traveling the wolf trail,” the wolf has always been known as a vital ally of Native people. In fact, both the Blackfoot and the Lakota believed that a gun used to shoot a wolf would never shoot straight again.

David Behrens - Founding Fathers
25.5 x 19 Limited Edition Print Mount Rushmore is an unmistakable symbol of American pride and strength. Ironically, sculptor Gutzon Borglum chose a most unusual location to begin the momentous task of carving the portraits of four famous American presidents. Mount Rushmore resides within the boundaries of Harney National Forest and Custer State Park. Both General William S. Harney and General George Armstrong Custer led expeditions into the Black Hills, directly violating government treaties signed with the Sioux. Sadly, these were two of the most detestable people in Sioux history.

David Behrens - Founding Fathers II
19.5 x 24.5 Limited Edition Print The term “founding fathers” can be traced back to most of our adolescent years when our social studies teacher used it to define the early presidents and their various documents that forged and formed this great and powerful nation we live in today. What we weren’t taught was that before the first American president there was already a system and order decreed by renown Native American elders and chieftains. Chief Joseph for example lived a life that personified his courageous beliefs. Joseph, a Nez Perce, grew up in Oregon’s Wallowa Valley, a region that his ancestors occupied for centuries. In 1874 the U.S. government ordered his people to resettle in Idaho. In the month of June 1877, Joseph began leading his people to Idaho in peace, but on the way found himself confronted by some hostile whites. Gunfire was exchanged which eventually escalated to an all out war with the United States. For 1,800 miles Chief Joseph courageously lead 800 men, women, and children to a Canadian refuge but was pursued closely by the U.S. Cavalry. Ambushed only 42 miles from their destination and with only 418 of his survivors he bellowed this unforgettable lament, “I will fight no more forever.”

David Behrens - When Colors Bleed II
16 7/8 x 24 1/2 Limited Edition Print In the autumn of 1868, Black Kettle, a southern Cheyenne peace chief, established for his people a village along the Washita River, which was near the Antelope Hills of Oklahoma. Within two months of settling there, rumors circulated of US soldiers approaching his encampment. Fearing for his people’s safety, Black Kettle and Little Robe, along with two Arapaho leaders, journeyed 100 miles down the valley of Washita to Fort Cobb, which were the Cheyenne and Arapaho Agency headquarters. There, Indian Agents gave provisions to those who had surrendered, considering them “old, young, and feeble”, while US troops rallied against their elusive warriors.

David Behrens - Visions of Valor
19 x 26.5 Limited Edition Print Not until recent times have the Navajo Code Talkers and other Native American veterans been recognized for their contributions that proved to be pivotal in winning a U.S. victory in World War II. Although other branches of the military enlisted Oneidas, Chippewas, Sauk and Foxes, and Comanches to encode and decipher communication, it was the Marine Corps that developed the largest program. By the end of the war over 3,600 Navajos had served their country and out of that number 420 served as code talkers.
